Why Having a Best Friend at Work Makes You More Productive and Happy

Using research and principles outlined in his book, The Blue Zones of Happiness: Lessons from the World’s Happiest People, Dan Buettner details four important things that will enhance your work life.

“For long-term happiness, try to make your career something that speaks to your passions.” – Dan Buettner

1. Try to Combine Passion with Your Profession

For long-term happiness, try to make your career something that speaks to your passions.

2. Try to Work as Close to Home as Possible

The thing people rank as the most hated part of their day-to-day lives is their car commutes.
Minimize commuting by car whenever possible.

3. Make a Work “Best Friend”

According to 2 million Gallup surveys, having a good friend at work is an important part of whether people enjoy their jobs or not.  Put yourself out there and make some enriching work friendships.

4. Take Multiple Shorter Vacations vs. One Long One Per Year

Take shorter, more frequent vacations.  Since when and how long you get away from work for vacation often depends on the amount of vacation time you’ve accrued, this approach encourages you to spread out your vacation time throughout the year instead of cashing it all in at once for one long trip.
