But that’s the view from 30,000 feet. Look a little closer and the county resolves into a tangle of economic components and a few skeptics.
Bonita Springs and Estero are home-building powerhouses trying to lure corporate headquarters, while Lehigh Acres and North Fort Myers are struggling to jump start their economies after being hit hard by the recession. But there’s broad agreement that diversifying the economy is the first priority.
That means no more over-reliance on the tourism and home-building industries that led to a disastrous recession when home construction screeched to a halt in 2006. The thinking is that other sectors — high tech and corporate head offices are the brass rings on this merry-go-round — could soften the blow if there’s a repeat recession. But diversification isn’t one size fits all when it comes to growth.
